Born for an exhibition on the sacred imagination, the work shifts the attention of spectators from the usual opulent themes of religious iconography to the humblest of creatures: the mouse. It also refers to the English term "poor as a church mouse" that is
"Poor as a church rat",
which means having little or no wealth and few possessions.
